Secretary General

Kostas G. Gkonis, PhD INTERCARGO membership reached new historic highs during this Annual Review’s re-
Secretary General porting period (Sep 2022 – Aug 2023). We now have close to 160 companies as full mem-
bers which, together with associate members, now total 250 companies spanning 30
countries. Moreover, the number of registered ships has reached the 3,300 milestone,
corresponding to one third of the global fleet on deadweight terms.

INTECARGO has continued its work for the benefit of the dry bulk shipping sector and
in the service of societies at large, with its agenda addressing the key challenges faced

by our sector in serving the world’s essential needs .
Seafarers, and their safety, remain at the forefront of our considerations. Indeed, in meet-
ing its environmental soundness objectives, our industry will need to pay particular at-
tention to its people. They will be expected to handle the new fuels and operate the new
technologies in the journey to decarbonisation.
INTERCARGO remains committed to promoting best practices and raising the quali-
ty bar above and beyond regulations. DryBMS, as a voluntary company self-assess-
ment scheme, is such an example. After all, this is all about excellence in governance
which, together with the social and environmental dimensions, encapsulate under the
ESG framework the sustainability imperatives of dry bulk shipping.
