Regional and Global Counter Piracy Guidelines

Industry organisations including INTERCARGO, supported by government and military organisations, have worked together to produce a series of regional and global guidelines that will help mariners detect, deter and delay external threats to their safety.

A new publication Best Management Practices to enhance maritime security for Vessels & Mariners Operating Off the Coast of West Africa including the Gulf of Guinea (BMP WA, click here to download) consolidates and enhances existing guidance for specific threats in this region.

Other publications include:

Global Counter Piracy Guidance for Companies, Masters and Seafarers (click here to download);

BMP5 – Best Management Practices to Deter Piracy and Enhance Maritime Security in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea (BMP5) (click here to download);

The dedicated industry website, www.maritimeglobalsecurity.org, is supported by a number of shipping industry associations including INTERCARGO and is intended to serve as a one-stop shop for companies and mariners seeking guidance on a wide range of Maritime Security Issues.

The Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) was launched in November 2006 with 14 Asian Contracting Parties including North, Southeast, and South Asian countries. It has 20 Contracting Parties today, including Europe (Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark, and the United Kingdom), Australia, and the United States.
