Priorities of Ursula von der Leyen on climate & environment

ATTN:    ALL FULL MEMBERS

Dear Members,

Ursula von der Leyen was re-elected President of the European Commission. She was officially supported by EPP (centre-right), S&D (centre-left), Renew (liberals) and the Greens.

You may note below details of the priorities of Ms von der Leyen on climate and environment:

  • A legally binging 90% emission-reduction target for 2040 will be introduced in the European Climate Law.
  • To achieve this, Ms von der Leyen proposes to translate the European Green Deal into an industrial strategy. The main elements of this strategy will include among others:
  • An Industrial Decarbonisation Accelerator Act, which will be prepared to support industries and companies through the transition.
  • The scale-up of investments in clean energy infrastructure and technologies.
  • This will include renewables and low-carbon technologies, grid infrastructure, storage capacity and transport infrastructure for captured CO2, as well as energy-efficiency measures, the digitalisation of our energy system and the deployment of a hydrogen network.
  • The focus is put on hydrogen, as no other fuel type is mentioned in her priorities.
