INTERCARGO has submitted 2 papers to the 71st session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 71) under agenda item 4 Harmful Aquatic Organisms In Ballast Water.

Paper MEPC 71/4/19 - Challenges faced by bulk carrier owners and operators

This paper describes the challenges that retrofitting a BWTS on to those vessels that use gravity discharged Top Side Tanks and proposes a draft amendment to regulation B-3.

Paper MEPC 71/INF.20 - Information on the technical and operational challenges of retrofitting ballast water treatment systems on existing bulk carriers

This paper describes some of the other challenges (such as powering requirements, availability of space) faced by the bulk carrier industry.

The INTERCARGO Secretariat is developing a database that will contain information on Ballast Water Treatment Systems that have been fitted on Members's vessels, this information will then be shared with Full Members.

The Secretariat has been contacting Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS)  manufacturers to collect information that may be of interest to members.

The information includes;

  • Manufacturers’ experience of fitting BWTS onto new build vessels and retrofits
  • Production capacity
  • Status of USCG Approval
