DryBMS – a quality standard for the dry bulk sector

August 2024 update

Launch of the Dry Bulk Management Standard (DryBMS) portal

On August 22nd, 2024, the Dry Bulk Centre of Excellence (DBCE) launched the Dry Bulk Management Standard (DryBMS) portal, dedicated to increasing safety, operational efficiency, and sustainability across the dry-bulk shipping sector.

INTERCARGO welcomes the launch and congratulates the Managing Director of DBCE, Mr Ian McLeod, on this achievement which paves the way to fulfilling the long-term aim of reducing incidents by providing ship operators with guidance from industry standards and best practices.

Many INTERCARGO members were actively involved in this project over the past four years which led to this milestone announcement and their contribution to this successful outcome is applauded.

INTERCARGO is a founding member of the DBCE and represented in the board in conjunction with fellow Board members, BIMCO, ICS and Rightship. We encourage and urge all ship owners and operators to become subscribers to DBCE as it provides to them the opportunity to help shape the ongoing development and implementation of the programme through their participation, a unique concept up to now for the implementation and development of an industry safety system.

Members are also reminded of the INTERCARGO Executive Committee decision to refund the initial subscription cost of £1,000 to each registered INTERCARGO member.

The DryBMS standard and details of the Dry Bulk Centre of Excellence can be found at Home – DBCE and members are encouraged to visit the site for additional information or contact INTERARGO’s Marine-Quality Manager Paul Markides at info@intercargo.org.

April 2024 update

Launch of the Dry Bulk Centre of Excellence (DBCE)

During 2023 and 2024, INTERCARGO, and RightShip, as founding partners of the DryBMS self-assessment scheme, continued to work on the establishment of the Dry Bulk Centre of Excellence (DBCE), an independent organisation, formed to provide the management structure behind the day-to-day operation of the DryBMS framework.

Following the successful completion of a testing programme during March 2024, confirming the hosting platform as “fit for purpose”, and the rebranding of the DryBMS website under the DBCE banner, a joint media release took place on April 3rd officially launching DBCE and confirming the appointment of Mr Ian McLeod as Managing Director, who will lead the organisation from its base in London, United Kingdom.

It is envisaged that the programme will be fully functional during May at which point both INTERCARGO and RightShip will hand over the day-to-day operation of DryBMS to the DBCE secretariat and subscribers to DBCE will be able to commence uploading their self-assessments.

Development work continues on the verification assessment system which it is envisaged will be in place during the 2nd quarter 2024.
